Crazy Coconut Water

Coconut Water

A lot of people much healthier than I could ever be have been going crazy for coconut water recently, so I thought I’d give it a try and see what all the fuss is about.

Benefits of Coconut water:

I don’t know much about the “why’s” of consuming coconut water, so I had to do a little research on this topic.
According to lifehacker, there are 8 Key benefits of drinking coconut water:

Helps with weight loss efforts
Picture Perfect Skin
Ultimate Hangover remedy
Facilitates Digestion
Boosts Hydration
Reduces Blood Pressure
Rich in Nutrients
Compatible with Human Blood

I’m not sure about most of those benefits, but I was a little weirded out reading about how some poorer countries have used Coconut water in a pinch to save lives.
How weird is that?

But surely it’s much healthier than my previous Lucozade addiction, I really need a healthier electrolyte source.

I decided to try three different brands of Coconut water, as it was the three that were locally available to me and let me tell you that although they are all supposed to be pure coconut water, they are very different in taste.
Now my reviews of each are all based solely on drinking the coconut water on it’s own. From what I’ve seen a lot of people tend to use it more as an ingredient in smoothies and shakes, but sorry peeps:

1: Vita Coco

Vita Coco Coconut water

Vita Coco Coconut water

Vita Coco is one of the easiest brands to get my hands on in my area.

Looking at the label, its 99% coconut water and 1% Natural Sugars, and I must say you can tell.
This was my least favourite of the three mainly because it had a thicker consistency than the others, but also a weird after taste.
I would even go as far as to say it was a little “oily” when drinking.
If I did buy it, I’d have to get over my lazy ass self and get the blender out and make some smoothies with it.

2: Innocent Coconut Water

Innocent COconut Water

Innocent Coconut Water

I picked this one up from the local Coop as it was the only brand they had available.

I had high hopes for this one as the Innocent brand has some really nice smoothies and other “on the go” healthy drinks that I’ve enjoyed in the past so I figured I’d give it a whirl. Looking at the label on this one, it states 100% Pure Coconut water.
You can tell with this one as it doesn’t have that oily consistency when drinking.
Although still a little sweeter than I would like, there is no weird after taste and much more palatable than the Vita Coco one.

If Innocent coconut water was my only choice, i’d definitely buy it and still drink it on it’s own.
No blender for you buddy!

3: Go Coco Coconut Water

Go CoCo Coconut water

Go CoCo Coconut Water

Well Go Coco was definitely a surprise purchase at first, and the one that started me on this quest for the perfect coconut water.
I picked this up as part of a Spar meal deal, who doesn’t love a good meal deal right?
The flavour was really light, which I didn’t expect and it wasn’t too think a consistency or difficult to drink at all. My main problem now is getting to the Spar before they’ve all been sold out. The label on this one just reads “coconut water, not from concentrate, natural flavourings, citric acid.”
Now if you want to be picky (like I always do) you could question whether this is 100% pure coconut water or not. I find the label quite vague. But who cares right? It still tastes awesome.
I’ve found you can actually buy these online for quite a reasonable cost, because lets face it, coconut water IS NOT CHEAP!!!

So if I decide i’m going to become fully converted, I may do this to save some moolah,

So my verdict would be, if given the option, I’d choose Go Coco every time for my pure unadulterated consumption of coconut water. Followed swiftly by the Innocent brand. I wouldn’t turn my nose up at Vita coco, but feel it’s best suited as an ingredient for other stuff than to bless my naked tongue.

Do you drink coconut water?
Let me know if you do, and why, and also what your fave brands are.
I really want to know more about this stuff. #newobsession
